HOT SPRINGS NATIONAL PARK, Arkansas — The massive winter storm that swept across Arkansas and surrounding states on Saturday has forced changes in the fifth annual Dugan Invitational Baseball Tournament at Historic Majestic Park in Hot Springs.
The tournament, originally scheduled as a three-day competition featuring eight teams from four states, now will run Sunday and Monday with four teams competing at Majestic Park.
Majestic Park General Manager Derek Phillips announced the changed schedule Wednesday morning as icy conditions continued to prevail in the region.
“With the cold temperatures and continuing hazardous travel conditions lingering, the Dugan will not be played Friday or Saturday,” Phillips said. “We regret, but fully understand, the decision by some of our scheduled teams to opt for caution. We’ll still have four teams competing on Sunday, February 1, and Monday, February 2, and look forward to a full schedule for the Dugan Tournament at Majestic Park next year.”
Phillips said teams from the University of Arkansas at Monticello, Henderson State University, Oklahoma Baptist University and Missouri Southern State University would compete Sunday and Monday on this schedule:
Sunday — UAM vs MSSU at noon and HSU vs Oklahoma Baptist at 3 p.m.
Monday — MSSU vs HSU at noon and Oklahoma Baptist vs UAM at 3 p.m.
“The Dugan has become recognized as a quality tournament where teams face tough competition to help their rankings to get consideration for making their regional tournament,” Phillips said. “Not only does the tournament showcase some really competitive teams from our region, but it also fulfills another goal of Majestic Park, which is to bring visitors to Hot Springs to enjoy all the attractions our city has to offer.”
The tournament is named in honor of Mike Dugan, the late Hot Springs baseball historian who spearheaded the creation of Majestic Park, according to Visit Hot Springs CEO Steve Arrison.
